C C 306M Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Pancreas, Palatine Uvula, Orthopedic Surgery
CC Lecture 2
Definition through word analysis: define a term by interpreting the
suffix first
then the prefix (if one is present)
then the root or roots
Roots w/ more than one meaning
ARC- summit, end, extremity
ORTH- straight, correct, normal, upright
Path- experience, condition, disease
Pay Attention to Synonyms
Be aware of changes in meaning
-lysis (process of dissolution
-lysin (substance causing dissolution)
Staphyl/o -> uvula, bunch of grapes
Strept/o -> twisted
Homomorphisms can be misleading
- Sometimes 2 diff roots simplify same spelling
- ex: ped- (L pes - meaning foot) vs, ped- (Gr. paes- meaning child) pediatrics,
pedestrian, orthopedics
Inflection and Medical English
