Proposed Constitutional Amendment
Although the constitution was the final product of so many conventions, it is still not
perfect, therefore, many amendments had to be done after its implementation. Such
amendments have served to give marginalized groups basic rights and to protect citizens.
However, it is important to acknowledge that more amendments will allow to improve
the constitution as the times change. One of my proposed amendments would be to limit
the terms in office of Supreme Court Justices. Right now, the life tenure maintains
justices in their position for life, which can be a faulty decision. By staying in their
position for such a long term, justices have the ability to slowly implement their own
agenda in their work, creating a conflict of interests. Also, as the social and political
fields change over time, the supreme court should change to accommodate these changes.
But when the justices in office are all still the same from decades ago, these progressive
changes can be hindered by their length in office. By limiting the term in office to
something like 10-year terms, it would also allow for the possibility of including more
diversity in the supreme court, reflecting the US population and their values. This would
also allow for there to be a limit on justices who have tried to implement their personal
agenda into their decisions. It is important to note that the other offices have some type of
limit on their terms for good reasons. This has allowed the US to progress in terms of
diversity.
