Revisiting Paul Light-America’s Achievements and Priorities
Assignment
1. Although the United States has accomplished various progressive achievements since the
turn of the century, the one that stood out the most was the full legalization of same-sex
marriage by the Supreme Court in mid-2015. The battle for equal rights for marginalized
groups has been continuous since the foundation of this nation. Equal rights and
inclusivity for the LGBTQ+ community has been an issue that has previously been
treated by ‘being swept under the rug’, to say the least. This was demonstrated with the
implementation of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” during the Clinton presidency. It was a
pitiable compromise that only further marginalized the community in the military.
Because of conservative presence in the state and federal governments, progress to
develop any sort of resolution was made tedious and long. The repeal of state bans on
same-sex marriage was a major step taken by the federal government to redefine the
traditional interpretations of the law.
2. Coming from a liberal point of view, the American Government has not always placed
the most significant issues for its inhabitants at the top of its priorities. Presently, one of
the greatest issues on the table is immigration. Because of the government’s focus on
deportation and increasing the amount of security at the border (without improving the
quality of the training for these officers), the issue has turned into a humanitarian
concern. First of all, the US immigration process is tedious and lengthy. Were talking 10
years, if not more. And, to people who are fleeing their home countries due to threats
against their well-being, illegal immigration in order to escape such situations suddenly
becomes the only realistic opportunity for chance at accomplishing what is called ‘the
