Accomplished territorial expansion through the combination of war and negotiation. 1845: texas was annexed into the us after briefly being an independent state. Mexican-american war from 1846-1848 added california and much of the present-day southwest. Oregon territory was added after the us settled a border dispute with britain over the northwest territory that is now oregon and washington. Important because us was able to project power abroad and ultimately globally. The territory expansion across north america provided the us with key resources. Land: source of wealth, and a place where the growing population would eventually settle on. Natural resources: provided economic prosperity and was also important when mobilizing for war. Set a basis for dynamic economic growth which provided a solid economic foundation for global power. Provided economic opportunities centered around natural resources found in western lands.
