They knew they could possibly die, yet they still came to west indies. Was major market for goods, fish, lumber, consumables. Lots of colonies were dependent on the caribbean. Some say the revolutionary war happened as fast as it did because of the goods the colonies got from trading = west indies sped up the revolution. By 1640s it was dependant on slave labor. Slave code - pioneered techniques of slave social control. Whites were small minority in west indies.
