A period of exploration between childhood security and adult autonomy. We go through a process of: exploration of meaningful alternatives, commitment to a future goal. Conflict between parent and adolescent rises through middle adolescence. Parents expectations often inappropriate for young person"s maturations. Their child looks older, so maturity is assumed. Adolescent conceive of the ideal parent so they de-idolize their own parent. + a preference for pleasure because it is experienced more intensely. To be successful requires warm, protective family bonds. Strengthen the young person"s ability to monitor their own behavior. Correlated with a balance of family connection and autonomy. Friction subsides by the end of adolescence because opinions are expressed and tolerated. Forms the most important predictor of mental health. Ask for advice within the context of more freedom.
