Rise of trade unions by mid 1800"s. People work together to maintain their voice. Type founders decide to take collective action: they realized that when they strike locally, they would bring in other workers from different countries, tried to reach out to all workers on continent. 1860"s attempt to make english and french connection with trade unionism. Mikhail bakunin: anarchist, thought marx was too conservative. To achieve communism, must first find an elite, needed to create a new party. Bakunin argued this was elitist, workers should co-op a political system, any political system will corrupt people. Better to smash the state, undermine the order, most oppressed workers should lead movement, not the elite workers: marx"s vs. bakunin"s. Paris commune, 1871: communard: supporters of this movement, radical movement of worker led politics, had power for weeks. Committed to internationalism, took down socialism within. French launch counter offensive from versei, bloody battles in.
