LEB 320F Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Virtue Ethics, Deontological Ethics, Relativism
Document Summary
Out-of-control trolley: this example emphasizes the importance of framing the ethical issue, collecting more information, and being creative: moral dumbfounding: gut feeling, needs more analysis, emotional reaction: least emotional impact, self-serving bias (avoid guilt, shame, etc. ) The dark knight: philosophical approaches to ethics given the chance, should batman kill. Downside: shifts because of variations in societies. Ex. labor laws when outsourcing, like foxcon/apple case: utilitaria(cid:374)is(cid:373): pro(cid:373)ote (cid:862)greatest good for greatest number(cid:863) Batman would probably kill joker to spare many lives: deo(cid:374)tolog(cid:455): (cid:862)treat others the way you want to be treated(cid:863) Batman would not kill joker because he would not want to be killed by the joker: virtue ethics: honesty, integrity, reliability. Traits are virtually universal in their desirability. Batman probably would not kill joker because doing so would be vigilante justice: moral minimum: tell the truth, do no harm, honor commitments, be loyal, legal vs. moral. Simply obeying the law does not necessarily fulfill all ethical obligations.
