NEU 365W Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dsm-5, Naloxone, Morphine
Document Summary
Ethics, cheaper, easier, learn treatment, easier to control the variables (i. e. environment, genes, etc. Understand mechanisms of addiction in hope of finding a solution for treatment. Test paradigm: repeated administration of the drug to rat = addiction model. Study - food restriction in animal models. Ex: risk for addiction - adults vs adolescents. Adolescents are exposed more - more opportunity/access vs. innate vulnerability. Disadvantages to animal models (humans aren"t always reliable themselves though) Hard to tell the affect - don"t tell you how they feel (though sometimes humans think they feel one way, but their behavior tells you otherwise) Can measure intake - humans might not be as honest. Dsm-5 criteria for substance use disorder (sud) Binge intoxication negative affect withdrawal (reward deficit and stress surfeit) preoccupation, anticipation (executive function deficits) Vulnerability - acquisition at a low dose (learns fast) High responders learn quickly and increase the active lever use quickly & intake increases over time.
