Socratic method- trying to get people to understand/try discover the nature of something. Wisdom = good judgement- from experience- bad judgement. To avoid bad judgement- wonder about the world, what we do, our nature wonder- reflection- critical examination. What there is : epistemology: theory of knowledge. Can i know anything? (also through reflection alone?) if so, how: ethics: practical, pertains to action. Should i decide? (usually phil starts this way) As time passes by, views subjected to critical examinations (criticize/favor) 6th century bc- contemporary greek playwrights (sophocles, euripides, etc. ) Wrote nothing, appears as character in dialogues of plato (427-347 bce) 1)early dialogue- (what socrates said (though not literally, generally accurate in historical context: middle- (uses socrates to express plato"s views, answers, later. Analyzes definition, asks questions to show that it is either unclear, narrow, too broad. Qa: what is a chair? (refer to notes) Good definition- definition to pick out all and only chairs.
