Viral texts, images, or videos that become highly popular through rapid user-led distribution via the internet. A social technology that mediates the formation of personal and group identities. We will look at memes in three ways. Peer-to-peer cultural production characterized by the creation and consumption of user-generated content. Blurs line between producer and consumer ( prosumer ); active audience. Blends traditional folk activities with current media practices. Emerges from non-elite social contexts and communicative inventions. Our traditions, scrapbooking, fan fiction, early punk and hip-hop. Bulletin board systems, wikipedia, 4chan, reddit, facebook, twitter, instagram, etc. Same content can foster differing or even oppositional groups. Serve as basic commodity for social media platforms. Business models depend on user data and advertising. Units of pop culture that are circulated, imitated, and transformed by internet users. User-generated metadata tags used to classify and search content. Platforms derive value from memes in the form of user labor and personal data.
