Private issues and social issues can be linked together through the sociological imagination. Social scripts need to be followed in order to achieve private goals and dreams. Sociological imagination a way of thinking that enables us to graph history and biography and the relationship between the two within society. Allows individuals to understand their own roles in shaping society and history. Individuals are shaped by society but their actions shape society. Voting; women were unable to vote before the 19th amendment. National security; different experiences for people of different ethnicities. Troubles: private matters in which values cherished by the individual are threatened. Deals with the self and the limited areas of social life that the individual is directly and personally aware of. Issues: public matters in which values cherished by the public are threatened. Transcend the local environment of the individual and involve large-scale societal institutions; when a lot of people have the same troubles.
