Document Summary

Interpreting the past 11: cotton gin and slavery. The technology improves quality of life of the human beings and changes the face of society. However, every technology comes with the cost: either socially, environmentally or economically. In the history of united states, the technological revolution introduced the cotton gin that had widespread effect on the social and economical status of the united states, having explicit impact on key institutions such as slavery and politics. Before the discovery of the cotton gin , the cotton fiber production was labor extensive i. e. huge amount of time and labor required for the production of cotton fiber. It was not energy and time efficient ie. small amount of the fiber could be produced in long work hours using much labor. Thus, the planters and farmers shifted the slavery to be non-profitable. They thought having and maintaining the slave was much more costly than the production made out of them.
