To move a pivot: insert on keyboard (doesn"t work on mac) then use manipulator. Modify > center pivot will average the object and put the pivot there. Snap - hold down v to "snap to point" 3 on the keyboard does a smooth preview. Mesh > smooth > option box (subdiv 2) Adding edge loops helps maintain volume, the closer a holding edge is to the real edge the sharper the smoothed edge real edge the sharper the smoothed edge. Dropping in more holding edges makes the edge jump less in smoothing. Parent-child relationship: when the parent moves, the child follows.
