Leadership: defined both a process and a property
As a process: the use of noncoercive influence to direct and coordinate the activities of group
members to meet a goal
As a property: the set of characteristics attributed to those perceived to use influence
successfully
Influence: the ability to affect the perceptions, beliefs, attitudes, motivation, and/or
behavior of others
A process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. Four major
theoretical approaches:
Trait
Behavioral
Contingency
Followership
What is the Trait Approach?
Goal was to identify personality characteristics or personal attributes that differentiate leaders
from followers.
“Great man approach”; leaders are born, not made. Research has identified a number of traits
related to leadership success.
Identifiable characteristics of leaders.
Energetic.
Operate on an even keel.
Seek power as a means of achieving a vision or goal.
Ambitious.
High need for achievement.
Recognize their own strengths and weaknesses.
Oriented toward self-improvement.
Integrity.
Not easily discouraged.
Deals well with large amounts of information.
Above-average intelligence.
