Under the peninsulares though, lling the good white collar jobs but not in any real power. Children of spaniards (criollos and peninsulares) and indigenous people. Lowest on the social pyramid: catholic in uence was very heavy. Spaniards modi ed many local religious thoughts and managed to work them into catholicism. Contractual relationship between spain and catholic church: corporatism - fueros. If something was wrong with a priest, was only subject to justice system in church. If someone in the military broke the law, they were subject to military courts. Very large territory with hard terrain, took a while to get information around.
