Watkins v. us (1957: very controversial--leads to barenblatt in 1959. The court says it has to balance the free speech rights against the need for security for the us. Backs off the opinion of watkins case, grants more power to these investigations: warren- No public purpose served to expose former communists. Chairman said it was a labor bill, but many of the witnesses and many of the names propounded to watkins had no connection to labor. Fed tried to regulate overproduction of crops, which caused problems at harvest constant. Fed would buy overproduction at set prices and destroy it to keep levels.
