Basic protection is found in the us constitution. Congress then creates laws to flesh out this base idea. A creation is protected for the life of the author + 70yrs. Non-renewable, at the end of this it becomes public domain. In order to be protected, it needs to be manifested in a concrete way. Only the person with copyright is allowed to make copies. Most fundamental copyright is the right to make copies of the work. Sue for injunction relief or damages on using protected work. Requires works to be substantially similar to determine infringement. Two fundamental building blocks that make up a copyright. Work needs to be original to be protected by copyright. However, it doesn"t have to be completely novel. Work needs to originate with the author, not copied from someone else. Difference between previous works needs to exceed mere triviality. Not a good standard, we will need to figure it out as we go.
