716 people per 100k incarcerated, about the highest rate in the world. About 1/4 of total prisoners are in us prisons. Majority are in for non-violent crimes, often drug related crimes. Someone is accused of breaking the law by the state, some kind of penalty of fine or jail time. Technically you can be tried twice for the same crime and not violate double jeopardy. Criminal case is where government charges and individual with breaking a criminal law. Criminal and civil trials, can be sued for wrongful death that would be a murder case. Offense against the state punishable by fine, jail, or death. Crime against the state, harm is against society not the victim. Entity bringing the charges is the state, not the victim. Government determines what is and is not a crime by writing laws. One crime defined in the us constitution, treason. Some crimes are obvious (murder, assault, rape) others are more political (prostitution, gambling, abortion)
