Document Summary

Science is becoming more interdisciplinary (combining multiple fields) Living systems are the most complex chemical systems on earth. Sensitivity (respond to environment in order to survive) Cellular level: atoms, molecules, organelles, cells (basic unit of life) Each level has emergent properties resulting from interaction of components. Science aims to understand the natural world through observation and reasoning. Iterative: changes made to a hypothesis by using new data. Must be rejected if the experiment results are inconsistent with the predictions. Experiment: testing the hypothesis, one variable at a time, with a control experiment throughout multiple trials. Predictions: provides a way to test the validity of a hypothesis. Scientific publication: last step of the scientific process, requires peer review. Reductionism: to break a complex process down to its simpler parts. Systems biology: focuses on emergent properties that cannot be understood by looking at simpler parts. Supported by much experimental evidence and scientific reasoning. Expresses ideas of which we are most certain.
