After the samurai film series came out (inspiration for star wars) There was an alternative movement considered new wave, where chinese film makers where making art house style films. This movie is one of the most critically acclaimed and most successful movies for this director. He has a very distinct style, potentially seen as slow. He frames up the actors mostly interior setting distinctive of his style. He doesn"t usually work with scripts he finds it boring. May get the script only a couple hours than they start filming. Usually film way more than they need due to this reason. Notorious for 30-40 takes for one scene. This particular movie was shot over 18 months. Focus is mostly on the right side of the screen as apposed to the left side.
