The criminal justice (cj) system is comprised of law enforcement, court, and correctional agencies that work together to effect the apprehension, prosecution, and control of criminal offenders. The american bar foundation recognized the need to integrate the various components of the cj system: they realized it was a disjointed system hidden from public view. The contemporary cj system: federal involvement in cj. 1967: the challenge of crime in a free society: a report of the cj process with recommended reforms. 1968: congress passed the safe streets and crime control act: this provided federal funding to state and local law enforcement and funded education and research, the cj system as society"s instrument of social control. Apprehends, adjudicates, and sanctions law breakers through its agencies. Resides in every branch of the government: principal components of the cj system. Law enforcement agencies investigate crimes and apprehend suspects. Court agencies that conduct trials and sentence offenders: 85% of trials end in a plea deal.
