Document Summary

Previous studies report worldwide variation in the frequency of. Dka at diabetes onset ranging from 12. 8% to 80%. Dka is a potentially life-threatening acute complication due to cerebral oedema which is noted in 0. 3 1% of newly diagnosed cases (szypowska et al. , 2016). The incidence of dka at diabetes onset may be due to parents" unawareness of symptoms of hyperglycaemia (szypowska et al. , 2016). These symptoms can lead to irreversible brain damage. In a research study in a brazil hospital, it was surveyed to establish any difference in symptoms of children with prior diagnoses of dm1 versus those who have never been diagnosed before upon the admission of dka. The hospital analyzed how important it is for parents to be involved with their childrens health. The study analyzed 52 pediatric admissions for dka. Of the group, 40. 4% had a previous diagnosis of dm1 and the mean age of admission was 11. 8 years (lopes, pinheiro, barberena, & eckert, 2016).
