Gun ownership is a particularly american (individualistic, paternal, violent) value. Part of hegemonic masculinity"s focus on violence. 11 million americans have a concealed carry permit. Licensed gun owners position themselves in contrast to vilified forms of masculinity (black and latino men) Aging men used guns to recover lost physical strength and power. Men are 3 times more likely than women to personally won guns, representing the largest demographic differences in gun ownership according to gallup polls from 2007 to 2012. Gun ownership varies significantly by region, with southerners more likely to own guns than those in other regions of the us. Marriage is a strong predictor of gun ownership (married people more likely to own). Federal bureau of investigation uniform crime reports data on homicides that occurred in the united states between 1976 and 1987. Total of 215,273 homicides were studied: 77% involved male victims, 23% female victims.
