HIST 1700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Female Hysteria, Oligopoly, Neurasthenia
Document Summary
White collar- ideas of gender move in and out in terms of work. Just like how only women used typewriters and then all genders used keyboards. Blue collar- when we made stuff in the united states, many people never purchased anything outside of the u. s. unless it was a luxury like fine china. You had to go through an apprentice program where you work with old men (journeymen) to learn the art. Semi-skilled means does not go through apprentice program but instead sits in on the job for a couple weeks to learn. These people are usually failed farmers because this is their only other option. Unskilled- somebody who only has to know how to operate his own body. The machines are getting better, so the people are getting dumber and dumber because the machines are easy to use. These people were usually all the immigrants after the 1800s. Very physically risky and unsure about if they"ll get work.
