OIS 2340 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Frequency Distribution, Histogram
Document Summary
Can be either discrete (only integers) or continuous (decimals acceptable) A tabular summary of frequency of data. Make the data more understandable for the person readying the data. Goal: use enough classes to show variation in the data, but not so many that some classes contain only a few data items. Guideline: use between 5 & 20 classes. Or, use 2k > n, where k is the number of classes and n is the number of observations. 294 data points that range from 10 rounds to 32 rounds. If we try 8 classes, then 2^8=256, which is not greater than 294. If we use 9 classes, we get 2^9=512 (so use 9 for the example) All inclusive (every data value must have a class) Empty classes should be avoided when possible: ** need to create classes with equal width that include all numbers in between 10 & 32, relative frequency: frequency/total number of data points.
