ANSC 485 Lecture 7: ANSC 485 Lecture 7
Document Summary
Eye appeal: horse vs human needs. Horses want: plentiful grass, room to wander, social interaction, shelter from severe weather, clean water, safe fencing. Humans want: easy access, clean, short haired horses, riding facilities or trails, climate control, healthy and safe horses, attractive, fencing considerations. What kind of horses: fencing and horse safety. Discourage horses chewing, pawing or leaning on fences. Avoid barbed wire, high tensile wire and woven wire: pastures. Pastures should provide ample room: minimum recommendation is 2-3 acres per horse. Fence horses away from creeks and ponds. Minimize pasture damage and maximize horse movement: paddocks. Smaller turn out areas for horses that are otherwise kept in stalls: generally horses are turned out for 1-12 hours, usually contain single horse or small group. May not need to provide shelter if horses are brought in during inclement weather. Use rounded corners and avoid shared fence lines to minimize injuries. Allow adequate space for the number of horses.
