Document Summary

The ecosystem introduces the element of the abiotic. Ecosystem- a self-sustaining community of organisms and the physical environments in which they interact. Biotic and abiotic linked via flow of nutrients and energy. Energy enters the world via plants and algae. Not sunlight earths surface and being absorbed by soil. First law- energy is not created or destroyed only transformed from one form to another. Second law of thermodynamics: all energy transformations result in the production of (waste) heat. Heterotroph: an organism that obtains organic food molecules by eating other organisms or their byproducts. Autotroph: an organism that manufactures its own food. Photosynthesis- lot"s of energy lost due to heat. Gross primary production total amount of chemical energy produced (by capture of solar energy) in a given time and area. Net primary production - the total amount of organic matter sequestered into plant material minus the amount used for respiration. Know which biomes have large and small npp"s.
