Stress vs pressure: pressure: typical of uids. A uid exerts a force on every exposed surface that is the same in all directions: pressure units. Sae- pounds per square inch (psi: metric: pascals= newton"s per square meter. P= force divided by area: the bigger the area, the smaller the pressure, stress: typical of solids. Stress is measured in the same units as pressure. It just has direction as well as magnitude. Stress vs strain: strain- how size or shape of something has changed in response to stress, strain has no units. Brittle vs ductile: brittle- breaks when stressed, ductile- when stressed, strains before failure. Types of faults: earthquakes occur along faults, which are planar cracks in the earth, three types: Strike-slip: the fault movement can be caused by three types of stress. Tear (shear: fault line- where the fault plane intersects the surface. Copper creek thrust fault- reverse fault with fault plane dipping less than 45%
