GEOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Caprock, Shale Gas, Seismology
Document Summary
Types of geologic resources: energy resources. Iron, copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, gold, silver, platinum, etc: nonmetallic. Sand and gravel, limestone, building stones, salt, sulfur, gems, gypsum, soil, phosphates, water. Renewable vs nonrenewable: renewable- natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time, nonrenewable- natural resources that cannot be remade or regrown at a scale comparable to consumption. Resources and reserves: resources- total amount of a valuable geologic material in all deposits, discovered and non discovered, reserves- discovered deposits of geologic resources that can be extracted economically and legally under present conditions. Short term supply of materials: differences. Oil, gas, and coal: gas, oil, and coal are only found in sedimentary rocks. Migration: oil forms in ne grained sedimentary rocks that have low permeability, as kerogen changes to liquid and gas, the compounds are lighter than surrounding. Uids and they begin to ow and migrate: caprock- mostly impermeable rock that stops upward oil and gas migration.
