Cultural universals: common practice & beliefs shared by societies. All societies have: sports, cooking, funeral ceremonies, medicine, religion, sexual restrictions. Innovation: process of introducing new ideas or objects of a culture. Diffusion: process by which some aspect of culture spreads from group to group or society to society. Technology: anything to make life easier ex) wheel to cell phones. Cultural lag: period of adjustment when nonmaterial culture is struggling. Language: system of shared symbols; includes speech, written characters, numerals, nonverbal gestures, and communication. Sapir-whorf hypothesis: structure & vocab of language someone uses shapes his or her perception. Values: collective conceptions of what is good, desirable, & proper (or bad, undesirable, & improper) in a culture. Norms: established standards of behavior maintained by a society. Sanctions: penalty or reward for conduct concerning a social norm.
