The making and unmaking of the roman empire: romans, barbarians, persians. The 3rd century was a crazy one for roman empire. Art showcased the violence between romans and barbarians. Had different cultures, speech, ways of conducting themselves. Seen as everything the romans weren"t (uneducated, illiterate, disorganized) Clear division between rome and the rest of europe. North africa, italy, greece, modern-day turkey, france, iberian peninsula. The further they went, the more uncomfortable they got. Romanitas- quality of being roman (culture, ways of being) Leaders have to focus more on frontiers than rome. The making of an empire: origins to augustus. Spread outwards in italy, then used to the sea to continue expansion. Punic wars (218-168 bc)- took down carthage in north africa. 14 ad- a sense of romanness is established. However, the land they"re getting doesn"t offer them much. Born 63 bc, ruled 27 bc to ad 14, princeps (1st citizen) Transitioned from republican values to rule by emperor.
