Slave occupations: sugar plantations in coastal peru and mexico, mining eastern andean jungles, northern mexico (zacatecas, guanajuato, pachua, ranching (african slaves are first cowboys in americas!, sailors, artisans in cities. Tailors (large population of freed blacks and slaves in these trades: tend to be slaves who are more hispanisized. Particularly true in urban cities i. e. mexico city. Becomes a big issue as it raises issue of whether slaves should marry: in spanish america, we see lots of family formation. V manumission (compare to the us: manumission takes place when masters free their slaves voluntarily, coardaciion legal possibility for slaves to save money and repurchase their freedom. Brazil: sugar and slavery: 3 key factors in portuguese colonization, semi-sedentary tupian speaking indian population. Unlike mesoamerica, they didn"t have a highly differentiated states or societies which were densely populated: i. e. mayans, aztecs, etc. Brazil = not very densely populated: tupians = semi-sedentary.
