Jurgen habermas (1929-present: first came up with the idea, space of democracy, come together to discuss view about the state. Neeladri bhattacharya, historian, describes the public sphere as disciplined : colonial context, the public sphere could not voice what they thought. Early 19th century: reforms led by men: sati, widow remarriage, prevention of infanticide. 1870-1947: no reforms: anti colonial nationalist movements.
