Grew up in harlem; succeed father as preacher at abyssinian baptist church. Became chair of powerful education and labor committee (1961) Unafraid of speaking out and challenging racism. Challenged segregation congressional facilities and hosted constituents. Would take them to lunch at congress lunch room. Worked w/ naacp on powell amendments that prohibited racial segregation w/ fed funding -- ultimately evolved into 1964 civil rights act. Would tack powell amendments onto ends of bills (ex hospitals couldn"t receive funds if they discriminated in their hiring process) 1956 supported dwight d eisenhower who had stronger civil rights planks than. Precluded slcl demonstrations at the 1960 national democratic convention by threatening to expose bayard rustin.
