African americans in northern, western urban centers largely descended from those who participated in the first wave of the great migration, or were themselves part of the second wave. Common denominator: escape from racism and oppression and find greater opportunity. Movement switches focus to political and community empowerment in urban centers since mid 60s were home to more and more african americans. Black population in a number of cities now approaching 50%, placing political power within reach. Black voters were registering and voting, but did not see the reward for their support. Little voice in city/county/state decision making process. Name changes, kwanzaa, natural hair, identification with africa, swahili. 1 week -- dec 26th to january 1st.
