April 18, 1847: us flanking force (lead by lee) moves around santa anna"s left and after 3. 5 hours the mexican line collapses, significant setback for the mexicans. Scott up, and out of lowlands in hualapai, road to mexico city ahead of him. Problem with enlistment: polk allowed people to join for however long they wanted, waited for months for new reinforcements to take mexico city. Effected the long-term thinking of many of the junior officers under his control (including grant) Cut off supply lines at vera cruz (too long/open to attack/took too many soldiers), and became self-sufficient in puebla.
