April 4: winter and spring of union despair (from last class) Hooker in charge, thought he got lee in a great position: lee divided his army and attacked, hooker thought he was going to retreat. Over next three days, lee divided two more times. Hard battle, jackson shot, hooker lost his nerve: hooker retreated, big defeat to an army half the size of his, 17,000 us causalities, 13k for lee. Hit union homeland with enormous effect: morale in us dropping to lowest point in the war, no compensating good news from the west. Grant beginning his campaign against vicksburg; his plans fell apart: emancipation and recruiting black soldiers. Black men can be in army, recruiting began in 1863: soon, full-scale push by union government to get black men into uniform. A lot of black men tried to volunteer earlier in the war, though they were not allowed.
