April 18: the grand review the citizen-soldiers triumph. 23-24 on may, 1865: two main armies: grant"s potomac and sherman"s from the west. Most historians see it as a great spasm of militaristic celebration: prof. thinks it completely wrong, thing to take away is the triumph of citizen- soldiers. The kind of militarism that was the bedrock, and what made the union worth fighting for. In a short period of time, the people would be home, not fighting: quietly disbanding to go home again. Million soldiers in uniform: more than we have now, 30-35k in continental army. Common denominator that most of them just wanted to go home: thought their duty was to serve until the crisis was over, that"s all, demobilization. Only 11k left at the end of a year: mostly colored troops. Regular army left quite a bit larger: authorized a peacetime army of 54 thousand.
