Document Summary
Oct. 10 trust & ethics of evidence. Contrast with reliance (we rely on people that we trust, reliance is part of trust, we do rely on people we don"t actually trust: reliance is the non-moral form of trust, their competence, their motivation, moral integrity. Plus 2 additional expectations: what they stand for, what their perception is of your relationship. We want to treat like cases alike (not treating one person special) Allow for optimism about their own competence and moral integrity: continually display each to patients, give some background into their reasoning, know that they"ve done it many times, stating if you"ve made a mistake. Encourage the two expectations involved with trust: expectation of shared values. State the concerns for well-being and respecting autonomy. State the limits of conscience, reassure about referral: expectation about the nature of the relationship. Regularly ask if the patient is ok during a physical exam.
