PHIL 1750 Lecture 3: Tolstoy (chapter 1)

30 views2 pages

Document Summary

Tolstoy began to feel plagued by the question on the meaning of life. He suddenly did not know how to live or what to do. He had moments of perplexity very often. He thought that those thoughts that questioned life and its purpose were aimless, at first. If he were to put some effort into solving those questions he surely could get an answer quickly. Suddenly he had no foundation, because the simple idea of the meaning of life had shook him and he realized he had no base. He knew most things about science and intellectual knowledge but did not know about the meaning to life. He could not live normally until he figured out the answer to the question. His life was a stupid, mean trick played on him by somebody . Sooner or later all his family would die and his affairs would be forgotten. Rational knowledge did not give any meaning to life.
