He exhibited an unusual talent for writing and languages (lating, greek, french, english, italian and spanish) Began studying medicine in the university of vienna at the age of 17. Limited employment opportunities (he was jewish) caused him anxiety and he began to use cocaine. In 1881 he established a private practice specializing in the treatment of the nervous system. His collaboration with joseph breuer (highly successful viennese neurologist) enhanced his career. In 1895 together they published studies in hysteria . Freud insisted they should address the sexual component of hysteria but breuer refused and this ended their personal and professional relationship. After the death of his father that year he began to experience feelings of depression, anxiety and an unnatural fear of riding a train.
