Reorientation of protestants into mid 20th century: religious activists against horrors of wwi. Growing nationalism in asia- japan and china. Younger generation saw evils of nationalism and racism. Identified as jesus as a supreme moral example. Younger generation criticized this, opens the door for cultural accommodation. Right after wwi events happened that shook christian theology. Commentator on paul"s letters to romans (1918) God is wholly other- said god needs to make self known. Who is god is and what it is to live by god. Known as crisis theologians- b/c when you encounter god you can choose to follow him/not. No orthodox because they reasserted traditional teachings like original sin. 1932 published moral man, immoral society: said instead of christianity accommodating culture, they needed to confront culture. Try to put an end to racism and nationalism.
