Late middle ages ottoman turks came to power and ottoman empire rose. Conquered turkey (anatolia, constantinople) istanbul, balkan peninsula. 1520-1566- sulaman the magnificent leader of turks: reached gates of vienna (christian center) Islamic power foremost economic power, high level in arts and sciences. Christian russians didn"t all convert to islam. Put pressures on empire from east and west. Late 15th century- russians ousted the tartars and moved farther until 16th century to caspian sea. 17th century reached black sea and ousted muslim rule. Rivals: russians sultan of egypt, power in persia. Caliphate in cairo guarding holy places in saudi arabia. In persia shah ismai safavi- long term influence. Development of warfare, changes in arts and sciences put pressure on muslim world. Knowledge was accumulated and stored: different viewpoint in christian land.
