1850s- anth starts to take shape with the disruptions caused by industrialization. Rural life is upended- young people move to cities. Evolutionary theory- darwin and natural selection: why are finches different- how did this come about. Basic conceptual challenge of how to understand the people under our rule, those of whom are fundamentally different from us. Anth. helped england understand those people and how to manage them. Cultural- 65%, archaeology- 30%, biological 3-4%, linguistic 1-2% Holistic: how are beliefs, practices and social institutions across multiple domains of a society interconnected? (politics, economics, religion etc) Need to understand all parts of a society and how they intersect. Reflexive: aware that we are all cultural beings, recognizing our own experiences shape our point of view. Taking into account the way people interact with you is based on yourself (female, professional, race, etc)
