Golden rule of environmentalism: a thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends to otherwise. aldo leopold, Sand county almanac: broaden our sense of community to include nature in all of its forms. A commitment this lofty cannot be sustained by doctrine alone, without a spirituality capable of inspiring us, without an interior impulse which encourages, motivates, nourishes and gives meaning to our individual and communal activity . Coalition: gives the free-market and society a nudge in a right direction, stewardship ethic, tend earth as a garden, environmental education, contraction, end of growth, e. g. , shelburne farms. Challenge to anthropocentrism: animal rights: animals are sentient, animals deserve respect & humaneness, animals are objectified and abused, peter singer principle of equality , human speciests, capacity for suffering, effective altruism.
