POLS 071 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: List Of Ongoing Armed Conflicts, Group Conflict, Closed List
Document Summary
Civil conflict varies across all sorts of contexts: significance is beyond scientific goals because it is a tragic phenomenon. Victims are forcibly displaced, collateral damage, enslaved into labor and sex industries, and lose the economic livelihoods. Larger part of our world than it was for past generations: 57% of refugees come from three countries: south sudan, afghanistan, and syria. Lots of political phenomena can be linked to it: the rise of the radical right, environmental degradation and climate change, etc. Most civil conflict is confined to the middle east and africa currently. Causes of civil conflict: not so good answers (often the conventional wisdom , however) Ancient animosities argument: current conflicts are rooted in historical animosities (1) past conflicts lead to future conflicts (distrust and grievances are rooted in history) Cultural differences argument: differences among different contemporary groups (ethnic, religious, linguistic, etc. ) Lead to conflict because they are always in competition with each other.
