Two theories of race: essentialism, race will never change & it will never be removed from our society. Race is socially real: race as an illusion, it is in our mind & we can get rid of race. *note that omi & winant disagree with both theories. Sociohistorical concept: race has changed throughout time, its social meanings are transient and unstable, constantly transformed by political struggles. E. g. civil rights etc: it is essential in the social system. We always notice the race of other people. The process in which a race is assigned to a group. Native americans identify themselves based on their tribe or region but now are given the title native americans. The process by which social, economic, & political forces construct & challenge racial categories over time. Media can connect with people by using racial stereotypes because we already have this perception ourselves. The sum total of human creation: intellectual, technical, artistic, physical, & moral.
