Medicalization of deviance : a condition or behavior is deemed abnormal and abhorrent by the masses, and is transformed from a deviance to a mental illness. E. g being gay was considered a deviance and therefore required medical or psychological help. Sexual deviance : a range of abnormal fetishes e. g. pedophile. Origins: late 19th century & early 20th century. Weimar republic- germany, 1919-1933: very democratic government & this is when sexology peaked. There were a lot of sexual subcultures in society. Society for more permissive around sex & gender & this allowed sexology to flourish. 1919: magnus hirschfeld founded the institute for sexology in berlin. 1933: the institute is destroyed by nazis. After world war 2 the research on sexilogical ideas returned mostly in the. Richard von krafft-ebing (1840-1902): psychiatrist who is viewed as the father o research of the sexualities. He wanted his book to help people like judges understand different sexual identities, preferences, and gender identities.
