Document Summary

Because it doesn"t need to pump blood as far as the ventricles do; also gravity is helping (less pressure and less distance) Pump blood farther than the right (to the body vs to the lungs); needs a higher pressure. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is an inherited condition in which the walls of the left ventricle and the interventricular septum are abnormally thick. Incompetent valves are valves that leak because they fail to close properly. When the cusps of the valves become fused or stiffen, resulting in narrowed openings, they are considered to be stenotic. If an atrioventricular valve prolapses (folds back into the atrium), blood can flow backwards into the atrium as the ventricle contracts. If prolapse of the right atrioventricular valve occurs, blood would flow back into the right atrium, and less blood would be pumped to the right ventricle through the pulmonary trunk and arteries.
